A Sunny Sisterly Week

Today, I don’t really have any tips or lists for you (coming from me, it is indeed shocking). It has been the first sunny week of the year, with rays so soft, they make you tear up a little. I know exactly why the sun decided to show up one week before the month of March, my sister came to visit!

Trying out a new sweet treat

For some while now, my friend has been raving about this American Pie from a local café that’s supposed to feel like heaven on your taste buds. So, naturally, we had to try it out. After basically planning our entire day around that cherry-filled objective, we managed to get there on the first warm day of the season.

The pie did not disappoint! It looked adorable, like baked goods for dwarfs, and the dough essentially melted in your mouth. The filling was divine, alas maybe a tad too sweet (although the sugar rush got me to uni on time). We paired it with a flat white and sat back to enjoy the view and create imaginary scenarios about the occasional bypasser.

The best thing about a small-ish town? My sister was mesmerized to find out that, although she had been in town for only two or three days at that point, she had seen the majority of the people on her other walks, earlier that week. Who doesn’t love a recurring character?

Despite this event marking the most awaited sweet treat hunt of the season, there were other glazed occasions as well. They included a slice of profiterole cake, raspberry tart and loads of those mini cookies one gets with their cappuccinos.

Thrifting at the two extremes

My absolute favorite second hand store in our town has two events I get excited about, namely the start and the end of a collection. During the last week that particular collection is displayed in the shop, the prices start to drop each day. At the end, a gorgeous piece is no more expensive than lemonade!

At the antipode, there is the week of the shiny new collection. The pieces are a lil bit pricier then, of course, but alas waaay cheaper than your regular fashion store. And the thrill of the hunt? Unmatched. Especially now that the spring collection is out and everything is flowery and bright and flowy.

That’s my excuse for being there three times the last week. Also, we mostly looked around because it is way more fun than it should be allowed. We got some stunning clothes, including an old money sports shirt I plan to wear when I go to tennis this summer. Have I ever played tennis before? Only on Wii, but I am level pro there. Jokes aside, I have wanted to go for over a year now, just to experience it, but the timing was never quite right. So this is me manifesting it this year.

I realize I really enjoy talking about thrifted goods, so I shall make a whole post about my proudest finds in the foreseeable future.

Fun workouts (including laughing as a core strengthening exercise)

Because the sun is a well known hype person, we had the energy to embark on some workouts together. We have very specific ones we enjoy, an idea originating from the lockdown times, when we used to work out together on video calls.

We mainly do two types of classes together, either a dance workout or a Pilates one. The Pilates is pretty straightforward, we have our trusted YouTube account we follow for such exercises. If one of us gets bored or is having a hard time, the other will start yapping until pain and time just slip away.

Dance workouts are just so special to us. Because we both dislike regular cardio (such as repetitive exercises or plain running), we were so happy to find a type of cardio we actually enjoy. And it totally gets the job done while feeling like a party. What more could a girl want? We usually opt for pop music, but we both have a weird obsession with specific videos (One Direction for me and Dua Lipa for the Moon).

Celebrating the first days of spring

Although we are aware that the first official day of spring doesn’t happen until the 21st of March, we love spring and we love celebrating!

That’s why we have various ways to honor its early arrival. On one of our walks, we got our mom a bouquet of snowdrops from a street vendor. We drank our (first) morning coffee on the balcony, letting the sun make a nest of our vision.

Every year, when Easter approaches, we discuss what we would want as presents. We usually make Pinterest boards and elaborate lists, but this year we decided to keep it simple and cozy. Over another cup of coffee and the song of zealous birds, we talked about this errand too. It’s always sweet, because our list symbolizes where we want to be in life and what we see as valuable now. I always compare it with the version of myself from past years, to try and find the red thread.

For example, my mood board always, without exception, has pastel colors, a lot of greenery, fairly-like dresses, mornings at the cottage, laundry drying outside and bunnies. Sister is very into the Tuscan Mom aesthetic right now, due to what it implies: taking care of yourself, expressing your personality without fear of being “too much”, living a life of comfort, peace and hanging out with your loved ones.

When I reflect on the past week, with a divinely-smelling hyacinth and a coffee sprinkled with cinnamon next to me, I feel so entirely comforted. I remember when I was convinced I couldn’t feel happy or content until I reached all those final goals. And now, now I realize that the “final goal” just represents the end of this exhale and the start of another one.

I might talk a lot about the same things, mainly coffee, walks, trinkets and the sun. But, at the end, these are the aspects of life that really matter. Not attaching your worth and wellbeing to an event so far away in the future that when it’s done, you won’t even remember the person who wanted those things.

As spring wills everything back to life, hearts blossom too. And hearts usually teach that nothing is as serious or dark as it seems, just happenings with certain pasts and possible futures. I keep reflecting on this, since my return back home. When I was a teenager living here, I was only able to see the elements that made me want to run away. My parents were either good or bad, never just people with qualities and flaws.

But I am here again, just like spring. I will continue my journey, as will the seasons. Until then, I will be delighted to observe our garden with all the hyacinths planted over the years blossom once again.
