We are all about the cozy season here, which of course is undisputedly autumn. However, we cannot ignore the beauty and the little pleasures of the other seasons, a very important one for me being cloud gazing. You know when you feel a little bit lost in life, but it is summer, and you know that no matter the problem, it will go away. You feel like you can lie down in the grass, look up at the sky, and let the shape of the clouds guide your next step. Well, this is exactly what Tasseography is, but even better, because you can combine it with a nice cup of tea, some candles, and a quiet moment of reflection.
Tasseography, or tea leaf reading, might be called fortune reading or divination, but this is not how we’re going to use it. For me, it is a gentle tool to guide me through life, a ritual that tells me when I need to keep my eyes open or when not to give up because what I was waiting for is just around the corner. Some people read the newspaper in the morning, but you can read your cup of tea in preparation for your day. What are the things you need to look out for? Where should your focus go? Do you need a little nudge of encouragement, a warm and comforting hand on your back to reassure you through hard times, to remind you that you’re not alone? All these things and more can be found at the bottom of your cup.
So, now that I fangirled about tea as I always do, let’s get into how you’re going to transform your mornings into a ritual that makes you excited to get out of bed. First of all, the tea choice. You can use whatever tea flavor and herbs you want; maybe if you want to bring some more whimsy into your life, choose teas that relate to your specific goal for the day (a post about this is coming in the very near future wink wink). However, there is one important thing you need to keep in mind: you need fine, loose tea. No big leaves, no twigs, no flower buds. If you have some herbs that you absolutely want to use, you can throw them in your mortar and pestle and make your own DIY Tasseography magic powder.
The next important step is the recipient choice. Rest assured, you don’t need one of those fancy tea reading cups with symbols on them, in fact. It is very likely that you already own all the magical tools needed, namely: a wide, shallow cup with a saucer. It is very important for it to be white or a light color, with no patterns, because that would make your reading much more challenging.

On to the process next. Put one teaspoon of your tea of choice in the cup and pour some hot water over it. Wait a couple of minutes for it to infuse and cool down a bit, and then you can start relaxing and sipping. This is when the magic is already starting to happen. Enjoy your tea distraction-free, think about the day ahead, or whatever it is that you need clarity for. This is your time. Enjoy it!
When you’ve drunk all the tea except for about half a teaspoon, take the cup in your left hand and swish the liquid three times clockwise, then carefully place your cup upside down on the saucer. Tap it three times and wait a minute for the leaves to settle. Now you can pick it up and start your reading.
At the beginning, it might all seem overwhelming and confusing, but the more you look into your cup, the more clearly you’ll see. Of course, you need to know where to start, so, to answer that, you start at the handle. The handle represents you, your location, and your present. From there, go clockwise and split the cup into four sections. Each quadrant represents three months or one week. The further away a symbol is from the handle, in the clockwise direction, the further away it is in the future. The rim of the cup also represents the present, and as you go down to the bottom of your cup, you are approaching more and more of the distant future.
This information is relevant to help you map out your reading and place the symbols on a timeline so you can build your story.

You will notice that the more you look into your cup, the easier it is to interpret what you see intuitively. That is the beauty of tea leaf reading. It relies on symbolism and connections; you are telling a story, and no one can tell you how to do that but you. Of course, I am going to offer you some guidelines, a little cheat sheet, if you will, to refer to when your inspiration is flickering, but I can assure you no information I give you will top the one that you have inside.
Let me offer you an example: in traditional tasseography symbolism, the cat is usually perceived as a bad omen. For me personally, through the prism of my experiences and gut feeling, I cannot see it as such; therefore, I always take it as a good sign. You see what I mean? For this ritual, you will have to leave your rational side behind for a bit and let your feelings and intuition take over.
There will be days when your thoughts are scattered, and the leaves will show it. On such days, don’t beat yourself up, don’t get frustrated, just accept the situation, take a deep breath, and try again when the storm has passed.
SYMBOL INTERPRETATION
Letters and numbers – A big letter might indicate a place starting with that letter, and a smaller one a name. Numbers are a temporal indication. It is important to read the letters and numbers in relation to the symbols that surround them.
Dots around symbols might indicate money or communication.
Lines or dots formed by the tea leaf dust indicate journeys. Lines might also indicate a connection between people or circumstances, depending on what symbols are around them.
Wavy lines show indecision or difficulties regarding a situation.
Crosses might indicate delay or “mark the spot,” meaning you’ll have to look around to realize what it is that you have to pay attention to, or they might mark a crossroads situation, in which case examine the symbols around to find out what you’re leaving behind and what you’re making space for in this situation.
Triangles and squares – A triangle, especially pointing upwards, is a sign of good fortune. A triangle at the bottom of the cup and pointing downwards should be read as a caution. If there is a heart around the triangle, it might indicate a love triangle. A square can either symbolize protection or restriction; you will have to look at the symbols around it for clarity.
Circles and diamonds – A clear, unbroken circle indicates good fortune. If the circle is incomplete, good things are coming your way, but they will require a little bit of patience on your part. If there are several circles creating a chain, it is the same situation as for the square; either protection or restriction and you should look at the other symbols for clarification. Diamonds indicate riches, or they might be trying to tell you that it is your time to shine.
Misfortune symbols: crosses, snakes, spades, pistols, guns, toads, cats.
Joy and success: crescent moon, clover leaves, flowers, trees, anchors, fruit, circles, stars.

Tea leaf reading is not about predicting the future, it’s about pausing long enough to listen to yourself. Each swirl, symbol, and tiny leaf at the bottom of your cup holds a whisper of your own intuition waiting to be heard. Whether your reading brings clarity, comfort, or simply a few peaceful minutes of reflection, remember that the magic does not exist outside of yourself, you are the magic.
So next time you find yourself sitting with a warm cup in your hands, take a moment to look closer. The clouds will always move, the leaves will always settle and somewhere in between, you’ll find the quiet wisdom that’s been there all along.
